Get Married in Capri

Dear friends, as announced, we have plenty of new features coming up this year, but if there’s one tradition we will hold on to, it is our Italian Weddings column, showing you the most amazing wedding locations in the Country.  We already told you about the wonders of  a wedding in the mountains and one in a City of art. This week we will tell you all about the delights of get married in Capri.

If there is a corner of heaven on earth, that has to be Capri. The charm of this dazzling Italian gem is captivating and, no matter how many times you visit, it will always thrill and enthrall you like the first time. This small but gorgeous island needs no introduction: it has had many names throughout the years, from “the blue island” to “the queen of rocks” – in the immortal words of Pablo Neruda. She lies like a siren in the Sorrento gulf and her ancient history, together with her glamorous attitude, draws tourists from all over the world. It is a perfectly balanced mix of history, nature and prestige. Capri really has it all. To set foot on this island and walk its cobbled alleys is to fall in love with it. And it is no coincidence that Capri has been inspiring great artists for centuries.

Why you should get married in Capri

In case you are wondering why you should get married in Capri, you’ll find the answer in the bright eyes and full heart of anyone who has visited or even passingly glanced at it. Those who have had the good fortune of spending a few days there will know what I mean. There’s something in the air, a trace of a distant scent that reaches you as you contemplate the colourful majesty of nature. And love, of course, literally is all around, in a landscape that is simultaneously romantic and festive. Capri is the Island of Love. And if that is not enough to make you want to get married on it, just visit once and you will find yourself willing to say “I do” there and then.

You can celebrate your civil marriage in Capri and, if you are a Catholic, you can also have the religious rite performed on the island, as long as one of the spouses is a Capri resident or you get a special permit from the Bishop. If you are choosing to celebrate the religious rite elsewhere and the civil rite in Capri, on the other hand, you will have a wide range of awesome locations to choose from. My personal favourite are the Gardens of Augustus and the Tragara Belvedere, directly opposite the famous Faraglioni: the view here is absolutely peerless.

Your wedding in Capri and the beauty of the Island

If you get married in Capri, you should definitely treat yourselves and your loved ones to a few days on the island. The two gigantic rocks known as Faraglioni are the undisputed symbol of this island. The tallest is over 350 ft tall. The name “Faraglioni” comes from the Greek word Pharos, meaning lighthouse: this is due to the fact that fires used to be lit on them, to signal the coast to passing ships. Another internationally acknowledged symbol of Capri is the Blue Grotto, a spectacular natural feature that was already appreciated by Emperor Tiberius, who had had a passage built that connected it to his private villa. The grotto takes its name – as you might have guessed – from the intense blue colour of the seawater in this part of the gulf. A sunny day has the effect of making the grotto look like it’s been lit from underneath.

Getting married in Capri will feel like a daydream, not only because of the stunning natural beauty of the place, but also because you will have a wide range of beautiful venues to choose from. The ideal time of the year to get married in Capri is mid-September, because of the mild weather and still relatively long daylight time.

Wine&Food for your wedding in Capri

Just in case I haven’t given you enough reasons to get married in Capri yet, let me just tell you about the quality of the local cuisine on this Mediterranean island. We all know that Italy has a rich and exquisite culinary tradition, with colourful regional differences. This means that the exact place where you decide to get married will strongly influence your banquet – as it is a known fact that you should always opt for local caterers, local products and local recipes, to get the perfect combination of tradition, history and local flavour. Capri is an island, which means that fish is likely to be on the menu. There’s a glorious tradition of pasta with seafood in Southern Italy and the local favourite are the so-called “scialiatielli“, a kind of pasta that closely resembles tagliatelle. If you are looking for a vegetarian option, you are in luck: one of Capri’s signature dishes has no meat or fish in it. The famous Ravioli Caprese are made from a simple and light mixture of water and plain flour and filed with parmesan, dry caciotta cheese and marjoram. The ideal seasoning for this type of fresh pasta is a simple and delicate tomato sauce scented with fresh basil leaves. If you like shellfish, make sure you try the local shrimps, that are fished in the gulf, close to the island. And, naturally, consider serving a local wine such as Falanghina and typical local desserts such as the Caprese Cake: a scrumptious delight of chocolate and almonds, perfect with a fragrant limoncello.

There are so many reasons to get married in Capri that it is nigh on impossible to list them all in one post, but I can swear by the magic of this island, that will charm you and your guests and provide the perfect setting for your own perfect day.
