Why are them so renowned?

1. Monterosso al Mare is the biggest village of Five Lands. It’s composed of two settlements,”antico borgo” and Fegina, the most tourist part. Monterosso al Mare shows off important monuments including a fourteenth-century church (San Giovanni Battista) or the medieval “Palazzo del Podestà”. In Fegina you will find “Villa Montale” e “il Gigante”, a massive reinforced concrete statue built in the early twentieth century.
2. Vernazza is probably the most evocative among Five Lands. It has an urban conformation witnessing its splendor since the Middle Ages, and today there still are a series of fortifications dating back to the eleventh century: a castle and a cylindrical tower. It’s full of architectural elements with great value, such as loggias, churches, houses-towers and arcades.
3. Corniglia is the only village among Five Lands without a sea-view, placed on a rocky promontory. Houses are short and wide, similar more similar to the inland ones. The most impressive monument of the village is the Church of San Pietro, in gothic-Genoese style. Its front is embellished with a marble rose window, rich of reliefs.
