Dear friends, this week we will continue our feature about weddings in Italy. In a previous post we told you about the beauty of the Amalfi Coast, now we are eager to explore the many delights of organising your wedding in Venice.

Discussing Venice in the brief space of a blog post is never easy, as it is too magical a place to be aptly described in a few words. Not only because of the canals that constitute the city’s distinctive, unique and worldwide famous feature, but because of its soul, which holds Venice’s true essence: a deeply romantic spirit, tinged with sweet melancholy and a unique blend of nature, culture and tradition.

A wedding in Venice means celebrating love while surrounded by the very same scenery that inspired the greatest artists of all time. You will be reminded of the unique character of this incredible city on every single canal, on every bridge and in every narrow alley, where you will have no other option but ditch all other modes of transport and walk. Turn your back on the metropolitan chaos and let yourself be rocked gently in magical silence by the lagoon waves. Venice will make you question everything you think you know.

Venice consists of 118 isles, connected by over 400 bridges and the only way of moving through this maze and unlocking its mysterious beauty is by means of steamboats and gondolas. This city has managed to keep its unique charm and its traditions intact through the centuries.

You can’t tell the history of Venice without talking about the sea, the sea that sometimes seems to be hugging the city and that, in the past, contributed to making it one of the most powerful maritime republics, the very same that can, on occasion, become the inhabitants’ worst enemy.

Sometimes, as the tide rises and the strong winds and currents from the south increase, water slowly invades Venice, only to draw back after a while, leaving the city’s magnificent architecture glistening in the sun. It is a spectacle like no other you have ever seen.

Venice is a miracle on water.

The lights twinkling in the lagoon and the magical atmosphere will add that extra touch of inspiration to your reception. Another detail that deserves to be taken into account is that every season is the ideal season to get married in Venice.

You can’t really talk about Venice without mentioning its most famous features such as Piazza San Marco, the Rialto Bridge overlooking the Grand Canal – 2,5 miles of water, bisecting the city centre – the Doge’s Palace – one of the strongest and most constant Venetian institutions – and the Bridge of Sighs, that is said to have got its name because of the convicts that would walk it on their way to the local jail and sigh in anguish as they looked at the city for one last time. Another local legend has it that the doge was so enamoured with the clock tower in Piazza San Marco that he had the architects and artisans responsible for it seized and blinded, so that they could never build a more beautiful one.

Venice is the city of love and it was home to the most celebrated womaniser of all times, Giacomo Casanova.

This is the one thing you can literally only do if you are getting married in Venice: moving through the city on a Gondola , using it to get from the church to the reception venue and taking in a few of the most iconic corners of the city in between. It is a spectacular celebration of love and romance and the atmosphere you will get in Venice is unlike anything you will experience anywhere else in the world. Some of the old traditional Gondolas can still be found in Venice and are exclusively available for weddings.

Traditionally, a gondola is steered by two gondoliers in white uniform sporting a waistband and a scarf in red or gold, matching the inner lining of the boat. There’s nothing quite as charming and romantic as spending the most important day in your life suspended in a timeless atmosphere, with the lagoon gently rocking you as you live your fairy-tale dream.

The Basilica of St Mark is the city’s main cathedral and one of the most majestic landmarks in Venice. It is built in a unique blend of romanesque and byzantine style and it contains several notable works of art.

Venice, with its charming canals and bridges, is by definition the city of love. It is a city shrouded in mystery and with an immeasurable cultural heritage. Its authentic beauty, you’ll have to see for yourself. For all this, there’s something unique about a wedding in Venice.
