My dear friends, here we are, once again, looking at the many wonders of Italy as a wedding destination expecially among the many places to visit in Italy. There’s so much that hasn’t been said yet. Italy is a splendid and complex combination of ancient traditions and beautiful landscapes, of unique architecture and countless artistic treasures, their history stretching back for millennia.

And yet, when Italy is discussed, particularly in media that are targeted to non-Italians, only a handful of destinations are mentioned. We all know that Rome, Venice, Florence, the Amalfi Coast, Lake Como and Apulia are beautiful, but it would be remiss of us to ignore the stunning diversity of the Italian territory, in which such a significant part of its beauty lies. You will find magnificent cities and charming corners in every corner of the Country. That’s why I have decided to tell you about 5 lesser-known places to visit in Italy that you should definitely visit.

Let’s start with a place that left a lasting impression on me, when I visited. Montagna Spaccata (literally: Broken Mountain) in Gaeta is a charming place whose legendary origins, like so many other places’in Italy, are connected to the Christian tradition. According to the local folklore, the mountain split down its centre on the death of Christ. The mountain is actually cracked in three different places and it is possible to walk through the cracks using stairways. Exploring the first one, also known as Grotta del Turco, you’ll notice a handprint in the rock. According to a local legend, a Turk visited the mountain because he was doubtful of its miraculous origin. Upon touching the rock, he felt it become soft under his hand. Walking up the stairs you will enjoy a breath-taking view of the crystal-clear seawater between the cliffs. Allow yourself to be captivated by the unique charm and mysterious history of this amazing location.

Civita di Bagnoregio, near Viterbo, is an absolute must-see when visiting Central Italy. It is known for being one of the most beautiful towns in Italy and it is also known by the suggestive name of “The Dying City”, due to the fact that it has a resident population of only ten. A series landslides have destroyed several of the town’s building and it is now only possible to reach it on foot, by crossing a long bridge that connects it directly to the actual city of Bagnoregio. A medieval hamlet immersed in a spectacular landscape. The spur of rock on which Civita di Bagnoregio is built is crumbling and shrinking by approximately seven centimetres per year, which makes this village even more dramatically attractive. Lose yourself in the maze of its ancient alleys.

Our journey through the places in Italy you should visit – and still haven’t – is now taking us to Tuscany. We are in Val d’Orcia, in the province of Siena. Bagno Vigoli is famous for its unique square of sources, a rectangular tank containing the source of water that has made the local baths popular since pre-Roman times. The water keeps a constant temperature of 52°, which makes it particularly suggestive during the cold season. Beside the characteristic tank, the whole town is dotted with thermal baths, which have drawn illustrious patrons for centuries. Lorenzo the Magnificent, of the Medici family, was said to be a regular. Nowadays, the village offers many other tourist attractions, but none as fascinating as the breath-taking view of the green Tuscan hills offered by its unique position.

The Park of Monsters, which also goes by the name of “Hallowed Wood”, is among the most peculiar places in Italy and you should definitely take the time to visit it. Located in Tuscia, in the prvince of Viterbo, it was designed by architect Pirro Ligori by order of Prince Pier Francesco Orsini. To this day, visitors are awed and puzzled by the countless secret passages and mythological statues, riddles and surreal buildings. The park was a gift to the Prince’s beloved wife. Two sphinxes guard the entrance, one of them bearing the following inscription “Thou that enter hither, consider what you behold and then tell me whether such wonders are works of deceit or art”.

Still in Tuscany, we move to the charming province of Firenze. Sammezzano Castle is an impressive Moorish building. The construction started in the XVI century, but its current appearance is the result of restoration work undertaken in the XIX Century. Each room sports a different and unique style of decoration.

These are just a few of the many places to visit in Italy that are worth seeing and that will dazzle you with their fascinating history, unmatched art and exquisite natural beauty.
