An Italian Masseria is a converted farmhouse, usually on a country estate, not unlike a spanish Finca. Many of these beautiful houses, which are mostly concentrated in Southern Italy, have been converted into luxury accommodations, b&bs or restaurants. We have selected five that we think will make stunning wedding venues.

Dear friends, our journey through the endless possibilities of an Italian wedding has led us to five amazing venues and I can’t wait to tell you abot them. They are quaint, stylish and romantic and will give your wedding party a unique vibe: italian masseria

Masserie started out as rural farm estates during the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. In the 90s, it suddenly became all the rage to restore and refurbish them, giving them new life and converting them into modern day accommodations such as hotels, Spas and traditional restaurants. It was only a matter of time before they took the wedding market by storm, with their unique blend of culture and charm, and became among the most popular wedding venues in Italy.

Masserie are a common sight in Southern Italy, particularly in the region of Apulia. A typical masseria retains its original character, infused with local traditions and rural charm that makes it the ideal setting for an elegant wedding reception.

A Masseria is a peaceful hideaway in the country, ideal for a traditional wedding and yet equipped with up-to-the minute facilities to ensure the guests’ comfort and enjoyment. If you are passionate about having a green and sustainable wedding, you will also be pleased to know that many Masserie are devoted to organic farming and only cater for zero miles wedding, in which the food is grown locally and prepared traditionally – which, of course makes it absolutely delicious.

Masserie are larger than your average wedding venues. In their original form, they used to include a farmstead – which was more like a mansion, in which the landowner would reside, as well as stables, barns in which the crops were kept and a small chapel. In most cases, these different spaces have been restored and adapted to modern-day needs, while retaining their characteristic features, such as the beautiful stone walls and inner courtyards.

What makes them such great wedding venues is the fact that, just like the romantic villages we told you about, they offer a variety of spaces in which to host your reception. There are plenty of options for customisation and details can really make a difference.

We have shortlisted the 5 top Masserie in their region of origin: Apulia. Will you get married in an italian masseria?
