WEDDING CANDLES FOR WEDDING

How to make and choose wedding candles, Necessary material:

1. Moulds there are two kinds: those from where the candle is extracted and those where the candle stays inside. The first ones are made of two halves which, thanks to an opening, allow to extract the candle once ready. They can be made of rubber or steel. The others, those where the candle stays once solidified, instead can be: jars, glasses, cups, tin or wooden boxes and much more.

2. Paraffin is the most common wax, it is found in scales or small cubes. It is white and odourless.

3. Coloured wax is a quick alternative as it does not require colouring. There is also a scented version.

4. Bees wax is a natural product allowing the creation of scented and amber coloured wedding candles. It may be used in lieu of coloured wax but is more expensive and sticky; I suggest you use that if you are already familiar with it.

5. Stearin is that substance giving hardness to the candle and allowing it to burn in a constant manner.

6. Wick is a cotton thread soaked in wax that may have different diameters.

7. Wax colours you can use special tablets, small wax disks to be added to the white wax to obtain the desired shade. A great alternative are small pieces of wax crayons.

8. Mould sealer it is an indispensable paste to block the wick and avoid that the liquid overflows the mould.

9. Fragrances to give perfume you will add a few drops of the favourite one to the melted wax. There are many different essences that will make the ambience more pleasing.

10. Small pan you will need that to melt the wax, better if steel made. We will also keep a knife and a spoon handy.

11. Thermometer you will need it to test that the wax reached the right temperature.

12. Other useful tools will be parchment paper, wooden or plastic sticks to hold the wick in position on the candle, a long needle, a cutter and a hair dryer.

How to make and choose candles

Once all the material is set on a table we will prepare the mould greasing it with olive oil. We will break a couple of wax blocks and we will put them in a pan in a bain-marie. We will make the water boil to melt the wax.

We will now add a few drops of the chosen essence and our small pieces of wax crayons. We will then set the wick at the bottom of the mould, we will pour some of the wax on the bottom and will let it harden to anchor the base of the wick.

Once hardened we will fill almost totally the mould. We will pull the wick previously rolled on a pencil in order to keep it straight. At this point the wax will have to cool for 24 hours.

It wll have shrinked a little and we will have to melt some more to fill the difference of level of the candle. We will slowly move the mould, we will cut the wick being careful to leave at least half a centimetre et voilà our candle is ready.
