Dear friends, our journey through the beauties of Italy, as we search for the best locations in which to plan your wedding, has come to its next station. Since Christmas is upon us, I have thought of a destination that can be said to be a proper winter wonderland, with dreamlike snowy landscapes. This week I’ll show you just how perfect and romantic a wedding in Trentino-Alto Adige can be.
As you all know, Trentino Alto-Adige is equally beautiful in winter and summer, but in the cold season you are in for some lovely surprises. Just think of how charming it would be to reach your appointed wedding location on a sleigh, for instance, and of how pleasant that journey would be, as it would take you through a silent and glistening mountain landscape, rather than the chaotic streets of your average city.

Wedding traditions in Trentino Alto-Adige
As usual, when writing about an Italian region as a potential wedding destination, I like to tell you about the local customs and traditions. Trentino-Alto Adige has a long and peculiar history and it is as rich in folklore as it is in natural beauty. A local custom for the so called “peasant wedding” allowed ceremonies to be held exclusively in those months in which the fields did not require work, which basically meant it was only possible to get married in winter. Traditional outfits were worn and the only means of transportation were the characteristic sledges. To this day, in the town of Castelrotto, in the province of Bolazno, this tradition is reenacted every January. A parade of 17 couples with their families and friends marches in their traditional costumes from San Valentino to Castelrotto, where they are served an en-plein-air traditional wedding banquet.

The cuisine of Trentino-Alto Adige is the product of a rich culture and a long history, which makes it yet another excellent reason to get married here. Your wedding banquet will be an endless series of local delicacies, of exquisite, strong and genuine fragrances and flavours.

The traditional hors d’oeuvre include plenty of soups, whose function is to prepare you for the following courses. A typical example is the Canederli soup, a spicy luxury of knödel and beef liver. A risotto is an excellent first course, as it offers a wide range of options, from mushrooms to potatoes and several other ingredients. Main courses in Trentino are entirely meat-based and game, particularly venison, is a local favourite. If, however, you can’t contemplate the idea of a banquet without fish, trout is your best bet: it is excellent when cooked in grappa or according to the traditional South-Tyrolese recipe. Among the strong suits of the local cuisine, cheese also plays a major role, as do desserts, particularly the ubiquitously popular apple strudel. And finally the local wine, which also enjoys worldwide fame and which will grace your table in the form of a sophisticated Pinot, a delicate Chardonnay or an exquisite Sauvignon.
